Watershed Ecology with GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
Syllabus
Day 1: AM: Introduction to GIS/GPS.
PM: Field trip: stream barriers and fish passage issues on Mount Desert
Island. Introduction to use of GPS technology.
Day 2: AM: GIS - Key mapping techniques.
PM: Field trip: conducting stream evaluations and collecting spatial data.
Day 3: AM: GIS - Incorporating field-collected data into GIS projects.
PM: Field trip:designing and implementing watershed surveys.
Day 4: AM: Spatial analyses and queries.
PM: Follow-up field work as needed.
Day 5: Approaches for discovering and sharing data with others using the Internet,
including on-line GIS and Google Earth. Techniques learned here will be
applicable to watersheds in other parts of the country.
