SUMMARY:Kippy Stroud Artist-in-Residence Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Artist Maria de los Angeles brings her vibrant\, deeply human exploration of migration\, identity\, and belonging to College of the Atlantic this October for a special evening lecture. \nKnown for her intricate drawings\, mixed‑media works\, and wearable sculptures\, de los Angeles uses art as a way to illuminate the lived experiences of immigrants and to question the systems that shape our sense of home. Her one-month residence and public lecture offer our community a chance to engage with an artist whose work is as visually compelling as it is socially urgent. \nDe los Angeles serves as critic and assistant director of painting and printmaking at Yale School of Art. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across the country\, featured in outlets such as Hyperallergic\, Artnet\, and New York Magazine\, and collected by institutions including the Museum of Sonoma County and Smith College. She holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art and a BFA from Pratt Institute. \nMarion Boulton “Kippy” Stroud was a talented artist\, entrepreneur\, generous philanthropist and impassioned promoter of artists. She founded and funded The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia\, an experimental program for artists working in textiles and other media as well as the Acadia Summer Arts Program\, or “Kamp Kippy” as it was more affectionately known\, hosting hundreds of artists and their guests and families over close to three decades. \nAs a way to honor Stroud’s legacy and commitment to artists on the island she loved\, the Marion Boulton “Kippy” Stroud Foundation and COA established a one month artist-in-residence program and public lecture in 2019 to perpetuate the spirit of Camp Kippy and provide the opportunity so treasured by Stroud of being in Maine on Mount Desert Island within an artistic\, intellectual and sociable community. The program has since expanded\, and now includes the Kippy Stroud Emerging Visiting Maine Artist residency in winter term and the The Kippy Stroud Memorial COA Lecture in the spring.
