SUMMARY:Live music: Ballaké Sissoko & Piers Faccini
DESCRIPTION:Mandingue musician Ballaké Sissoko and British folk artist Piers Faccini share the Thomas S. Gates Community Center stage in conversation and collaboration. \nAfter meeting at the same record label\, the two artists set out to explore each other’s musical style and history through first sharing music and then collaborating on producing music. The result is a calm\, contemplative\, and beautiful cross-cultural sound with Faccini on the guitar and Sissoko on the kora\, a 21-stringed instrument from West Africa. \nBallaké Sissoko is a kora player and composer from Bamako\, Mali. Piers Faccini is a singer\, songwriter\, musician\, and producer from London\, England. Both men have spent their careers collaborating with other artists from around the world\, which has influenced each of their unique sounds and ways of making music. Their partnership has produced an EP\, When the World was Song\, and an album\, Our Calling\, both released in 2025. \nThis event is free for COA guests\, and by donation for non-COA guests. \nView the artists here \n

SUMMARY:Strengthening community: Forging connections through art
DESCRIPTION:College of the Atlantic faculty and students help lead an afternoon of interactive workshops focused on creating positive change at Jesup Memorial Library. \nLooking for a chance to learn something creative\, make new friends\, and enjoy the beauty of a spectacular new community space in Bar Harbor? Join eight artists for an interactive afternoon of creative expression\, music\, and refreshments. \nThe event is being organized by State Representative Gary Friedmann\, in hopes of strengthening community bonds and nourishing stressed minds at a time of political chaos and national divisiveness. \n“I’m excited to bring people together to celebrate the energy and passion of our island community\,” Friedmann said. \nAfter introductions\, participants will select two out of ten 30-minute workshops to experience how art can help raise awareness and drive positive change. \nDelve into what lies in your heart with Karin Spitfire\, the author of two poetry collections and activist conceptual artist. She will use prompts to encourage participants to create community through expressions of shared humanity. \nTry acting with Molly Dillon ’28\, an actor studying at College of the Atlantic\, with a concentration in theatre and performance. All levels of experience are welcome: your background\, age\, or theatre experience won’t matter. \nImprovise meaningful movement with Tammy Richards\, a professional actor\, dancer and choreographer. She uses movement improvisation as a way to share feelings and actions related to the current political environment. Participants will create a simple gesture in response to a prompt\, such as “after the 2020 election\, I…”.  By sharing\, expanding\, and exchanging gestures with partners and the larger group\, participants will build a movement story about our journeys through challenging times. \nCreate paper puppets of migratory animals with Melissa Ferrari\, an experimental animated documentarian\, and professor of interdisciplinary arts at COA. Participants will bring these simple puppets\, of creatures living in the skies and waters of our community\, to life through animation\, using free animation software. \nWrite and perform a musical round with COA professor Gray Cox\, a singer/songwriter. He will lead us in creating “Breath on the Waters\,” to share with the larger group at the closing of the afternoon. \nExperiment with visual collage with Neeraj Sebastian\, the COA T.A. Cox Chair in Studio Arts. Participants will work from life and direct observation\, with scissors and a limited palette\, to look closely and find something new and surprising in the familiar and the everyday. \nPractice beeswax candle-dipping with Liz Cutler\, Founder of ArtWaves. Dipping creates a calming\, welcoming space for conversation – perhaps about our layers. Participants will be invited to make two candles\, one to keep and one to give away. This ancient craft helps participants discover commonalities\, and the layers of our stories while offering a small gesture of connection\, with time to examine what effectively brings us together to restore hope and bring warmth to fractured relationships between neighbors. \nThis forum will be held in the new meeting spaces of the expanded library\, and will be accessible through the parking lot entrance on School Street. SUMMARY:Kippy Stroud Artist-in-Residence Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Artist Maria de los Angeles brings her vibrant\, deeply human exploration of migration\, identity\, and belonging to College of the Atlantic this October for a special evening lecture. \nKnown for her intricate drawings\, mixed‑media works\, and wearable sculptures\, de los Angeles uses art as a way to illuminate the lived experiences of immigrants and to question the systems that shape our sense of home. Her one-month residence and public lecture offer our community a chance to engage with an artist whose work is as visually compelling as it is socially urgent. \nDe los Angeles serves as critic and assistant director of painting and printmaking at Yale School of Art. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across the country\, featured in outlets such as Hyperallergic\, Artnet\, and New York Magazine\, and collected by institutions including the Museum of Sonoma County and Smith College. She holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art and a BFA from Pratt Institute. \nMarion Boulton “Kippy” Stroud was a talented artist\, entrepreneur\, generous philanthropist and impassioned promoter of artists. She founded and funded The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia\, an experimental program for artists working in textiles and other media as well as the Acadia Summer Arts Program\, or “Kamp Kippy” as it was more affectionately known\, hosting hundreds of artists and their guests and families over close to three decades. \nAs a way to honor Stroud’s legacy and commitment to artists on the island she loved\, the Marion Boulton “Kippy” Stroud Foundation and COA established a one month artist-in-residence program and public lecture in 2019 to perpetuate the spirit of Camp Kippy and provide the opportunity so treasured by Stroud of being in Maine on Mount Desert Island within an artistic\, intellectual and sociable community. The program has since expanded\, and now includes the Kippy Stroud Emerging Visiting Maine Artist residency in winter term and the The Kippy Stroud Memorial COA Lecture in the spring.
