Overview

Thorndike Library staff members are dedicated to developing information proficient students who are able to identify, locate, synthesize, evaluate, and cite information sources. We are eager to support all those teaching within the curricular or co-curricular spheres to promote learning and research skills.

Instruction

Classroom Instruction

Library staff is available to come to your classroom and provide instruction in library resources and searching techniques. Instruction in the use of AV equipment and software is also possible. These sessions can be tailored to your needs and the needs of your class and can vary in length.

Beyond the Classroom

Library staff will work with you to create information learning experiences beyond the classroom. These could be optional or required training sessions.

Individual Appointments

Library staff is happy to make appointments with COA community members at anytime to help with their research and academic needs as they relate to information resources, audio-visual instruction, and/or the archives.

Collection Development

The library’s goal is to support the academic and co-curricular needs of the COA community. If there are books, videos, AV equipment, or other collection items for the library that would enhance your teaching and student learning, we want to know.  These could be specific or general suggestions.

Online Course Guides

We can create online course guides directing students to library resources specifically geared to your course needs.

Reserves

Library items as well as your own personal items can be placed on course reserve for your classes.  For details, visit course reserves.

Research

We can help support your research by getting items via interlibrary loan that you cannot access through the library’s resources. We can also help you with “alerts”, a feature that many of our databases provide. Some alerts allow you to be contacted when a new article appears that matches your predefined search criteria. Others will send you the table of contents when a new journal issue is released. Please contact library@coa.edu for assistance with alerts.
