COA student artwork for Black History Month selected by Maine state chamber of commerce

Black Mariners by Sadie Cooley ’22Black Mariners by Sadie Cooley ’22

The Maine state chamber of commerce is paying tribute to Black and African Americans for their achievements and contributions to our country and state, and as Maine’s business community strengthens our commitment to equality, equity, and opportunity for all.

Each Friday in February, they are highlighting a few awareness posters featuring original artwork by students at the College of the Atlantic to honor Black History Month in Maine. Learn more about the project and view all 14 posters here: https://www.mdislander.com/living/arts-a-living/posters-celebrate-black-history-month.

Dru Colbert’s communication design class annually creates “awareness posters” as a service to different local organizations. Over the years, students have created posters for Healthy Acadia, Down East Aids Organization, Friends of Acadia and many more.

Malaga Survives by Emily Sanborn ’21Malaga Survives by Emily Sanborn ’21Colbert’s class last year came up with an idea to create a project that celebrates Black history in Maine. Each poster bears a visual of a renowned Black individual, group, or place with ties to Maine. The 15 posters were designed by the students using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop computer design software. Schools and libraries can access the posters, which are offered free to institutions around Maine.

“Black History Month extends beyond the month of February and these posters are just a great way to honor it—the wider they are distributed, the better,” Colbert said.Safiya Khalid by Adel Misherghi ’23Safiya Khalid by Adel Misherghi ’23
