This course studies the American novel as written by women of the nineteenth century.

It focuses on how women’s issues and styles change over the course of the century, with its revolutionary economic, technological, social and political shifts, as well as on enduring questions.

As we read from among the wide selection of nineteenth-century American women novelists (who outnumbered and outsold male authors)—such as Rowson, Foster, Child, Cooke, Fern, Stowe, Phelps, Jewett, Chopin, and Gilman—we consider how they have shaped the tradition of the novel and social values Americans encounter today.
