Getting here:

I originally toured COA when my older sister was applying to colleges. What immediately set COA apart for me was how at home I felt here. Two years later, when it was my turn to apply to collage, I had nearly forgotten about COA. It wasn’t until I realized that this was the only place where I could explore so many different topics because I wasn’t being held back by major or a department. In the end I applied early decision and got in!

I came here thinking that I would be taking classes that are focused around sustainability, but I have learned that COA provides so much more and I eventually found myself in love with the Education Department. I am debating now whether I want to get a teaching certificate, but I know that I want to get certified as a Montessori School teacher.

So far, I have taken Geology of MDI, The Core Course, Globalization and Anti-Globalization, Women in the Nineteenth Century, Renaissance and the Reformation, Principles of Comedic Improv 1 and 2, Experiential Education, Writing Seminar II, Platforms of Thought, Education Innovation, and Supporting Students with Disabilities.

Favorite class:

My favorite classes have all been education classes. Bonnie Tai’s Experiential Education class is really what made me realize that education is where I want my focus to be. As a class we got really close and had so much fun on a daily basis. There was a lot of reading and projects, but I enjoyed all of them!

Life on Mount Desert Island:

MDI is such a beautiful place! I often forget how lucky I am to be able to live and go to school here. I am so busy with schoolwork that I don’t get into the park nearly as often as I would like.

As an education student, I have found the community to be very open to me. Every school I contact to do observation hours or community service hours enthusiastically greets me and welcomes me into their classrooms.

COA might be the right college for you if...

You feel strongly about practicing sustainable living, thrive off open style classes and requirements, have many different areas you would like to study, and enjoy a close community of like-minded people!

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

The egg!
