Getting here:

I was playing an add on for the post apocalyptic role playing game Fallout 4 set on Mount Desert Island and I thought to myself, “Geez this place is pretty cool, if only it were real” - turns out it was. And there was a school with a great marine biology program there too, go figure.

Favorite class:

That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child

My approach to human ecology:

Throw paint on the wall and see what sticks

Internship:

Intertidal Synthesis at the Schoodic Institute during the summer of 2021

Life on Mount Desert Island:

Few places on this Earth have a higher concentration of delicious, local fried seafood than Mount Desert Island - if it aligns with your dietary preferences please run down to Beal’s Lobster Pier while it’s still warm outside, I promise you won’t regret it. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself kind of person then pick your own mussels off the boat ramp at Hadley Point - you get 40 a day with no license or registration necessary. The last place you need to go is approximately 3/4 of the way through Witch Hole Loop. You’ll know the spot I’m talking about when you get there - turn around, snap the best picture of your life, and show it to people in your hometown when they ask where you go to college.

Activities, traditions, celebrations:

Halloween is always a time here at COA. If you’re into dances we throw a pretty a good one where there’s a delicious contrast between the red-hot energy of the dance floor and the crisp autumn air right outside the auditorium. If you like handing out candy, Hannaford’s sells candy canes for real cheap and it’s oh so much fun to throw them at your fellow classmates as they walk past your dorm to the dance.

Passions & motivations:

At the moment, my top 3 would probably be phylogeny, petrology and screwing around with maps in that order

Adventures yet to come:

1) Exploring the basalt formations of the Hawaiian Islands

2) Looking at fouling communities across America’s busiest ports

3) Sticking my hands in the water while riding “It’s a small world” and having the cast member call me champ while reminding me to “keep my arms, legs, hands, and feet inside the vehicle at all times”

Best meal on campus:

A cheeky roast beef on ciabatta from the Sea Urchin Café

COA might be the right college for you if...

You say the word “folks” a lot

Ephemera:

Tripping and flooding your waders when you’re shin deep into the mud off Thompson Island in November
