Before COA

I went to Mt. Desert Rock in ’91 and after conducting 4 months of humpback whale research on zodiacs in winter ’92 in Hawaii I started at Allied Whale in spring 1992 with Steve Katona. Been an Allied Whale staffer since then, and became a Research Associate of COA. Before COA I went to grad school at SFSU in CA and got my Master’s in Physiology and Behavioral Biology. I’ve lived in Bar Harbor since 1983 but travel to work with whales all over the country and world.

My most frequently asked question is...

Where are you? (Since I travel all the time and live in CA and ME depending on what time of the year).

What else?

I am a senior researcher in marine mammal science, a PSO/ MMO (protected species observer/ marine mammal observer), PAM (passive acoustic monitoring) analyst, & Subject Matter Expert in marine mammals and in survey logistics having managed and led ~50 marine mammal research and vessel, shore-based, or aerial line transect survey projects since ’92. I have published as primary or co-author 11 peer-reviewed marine mammal publications since 2007, some on precedent setting findings. I also manage and author NEPA documents for a living and know a lot about impact assessments for marine mammals, sea turtles, and terrestrial (birds, critters) species. As Principle Investigator I hold the Federal Research Permit that COA and AW operates under for whale research. I started my own non-profit called Cetos Research Organization since I do a lot of research in the Pacific including the Western Tropical Pacific (Marianas islands) and have another NMFS permit for work there. I have been part of Allied Whale for 30 years!
