Scholarly and Creative Interests

I am a disease ecologist and marine biologist by training with a keen interest in programming, data science, and the use of novel data sources in research. The core of my research focuses on spatial and temporal patterns in human and biological systems, including disease spread, animal movement, and fisheries management. I use spatiotemporal modelling and other data science techniques to understand these patterns and to evaluate the impact of interventions and policy decisions.

Over time my interests have evolved to include issues of unequal access in computer science education including barriers related to native language, accessibility, and geography. I am working on several open-source projects with members of the Rladies, Pyladies, Afrimapr, and Minorities in R communities including the development of open-source pedagogical and methodological approaches to equip communities with the tools to engage in data science work so that they may address issues of local and/or ecocultural importance.

More About Me

Outside of work I enjoy learning languages, hiking, swimming, skating, playing ultimate frisbee, and sailing.
