This skill builder course, taught by College of the Atlantic graduate Rob Finn ’92, a working artist from Philadelphia, is open to painters of all experience levels looking to better familiarize or advance their application of outdoor painting from nature with watercolors. Participants will have the opportunity to build on their drawing skills, establishing proper proportions, sighting space and distance while exploring different styles of expression through color and composition.

During the week the class will explore COA’s beautiful seaside campus and nearby scenic areas in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island to find ideal plein-air sites for variety in landscapes, flora, architecture and even figures. Classes will be arranged to take advantage of subjects, styles, and lighting students would like to investigate.

Each day will begin with quick drawing to loosen up the creative muscles while examining the works and techniques of masters of the art such as Sargent, Homer, and Wyeth whose work shaped the genius of the American watercolor movement. Days will end with a group discussion of progress and goals.

Paper, paint, and brushes will be provided. Advanced participants are encouraged to bring their own field easels but lap painting will be the standard.
