The COA beach is made up of smooth stones, sea glass, pottery, periwinkle shells, and treasures galore. Bring your beach attire and sift the sand as we learn about the world on the edge through stories, projects, games, and songs. Make works of art with seaweed and seashells, find creatures amidst the pools of the intertidal, and enjoy our beautiful coastline.

Nature’s Neighborhoods

June 27 – July 1
5-day Session: $285 Resident / $360 Non-resident

Take a stroll around nature’s neighborhoods and get to know how and why animals build their homes where they do, from the ever-changing intertidal, to the treetops of the forest, to the grassy wetlands and rushing streams. Search for networks of nests, districts of dens, and boroughs of burrows, as we explore what habitats are and how they suit species in different ways. Games, art, and songs too!

Down By The Bay

July 5 – July 8 [No SFS on July 4th]

Bring your bathing suit and goggles to explore what creatures and treasures you may find along our rocky shore, down by Frenchman Bay. Learn about the world beneath the waves through stories, projects, games, and songs. Print with seaweed, make seashell mobiles, and craft sea glass mosaics. Find creatures amidst the pools of the intertidal while taking a dip in Frenchman Bay and enjoying our beautiful coastline.

Color Collectors

July 11 – July 14
4-day Session: $230 Resident / $300 Non-resident

Set your sights on the vibrant colors and patterns found all around you—the wings of a bird, the scales of a fish, the crystals in granite, and the petals of a flower. Head down to the beach, into the forest, and through the garden to discover the rainbow of plants and animals that don brilliant hues and consider how this helps them survive. Be inspired to paint, tell stories, collect treasures, and play games!

Deep Blue Sea

July 18 – July 22

Make works of art with seawater, sand, and stone. Explore the home of whales, porpoises, pelagic birds, and the deep beyond while taking a dip in Frenchman Bay and enjoying our beautiful coastline.

Bug World

July 25 – July 28
4-day Session: $230 Resident / $300 Non-resident

Take a closer look at the billions of little lives that surround us. On your skin, beneath the soil, under tree bark, or along the shoreline— it is inevitable we will come across a six, eight, or hundred-legged friend. With magnifying glass in hand, see another side of the insects with which we share our world. Bees, wolf spiders, roly-polys, butterflies, ladybugs, fireflies, and slugs are just a few of these bizarre animals you might encounter.

Forest Friends

August 1 – August 5
5-day Session: $285 Resident / $360 Non-resident

Venture down to the woods to visit with the creatures wriggling in the leaf litter, perched on branches, and hopping from limb to limb. Come with an observant eye, as we explore the mushrooms, moss, rocks, and plants that live on the forest floor and make crafts to accompany them. Build fairy houses, make bark prints, play games, find food caches, and be enchanted by the forest friends we meet.

Gnome-nclature

August 8 – August 11

Go with the garden gnomes and discover the miniature world of plants. What does it take to make a seed sprout? A garden grow? Roll up your sleeves, grab a trowel, and come learn about the magic that happens when you combine seeds, sun, soil, water, worms, and a little love. Create beautiful portable gardens, fairy houses and artwork; learn about the magic of seeds, sing songs, play games, and explore what grows in the forest, fields, and at the seashore!
