Burrows, Buildings, & Beehives

Build forts, nests, and burrows while learning about how animals make their own unique homes. Visit the forest, beach, and gardens and see how humans and other animals use the materials of the natural world to build their dwellings. From beehives to birdhouses—come explore and construct the structures creatures call home. Games, papier mâché art, and songs too!

Wildlife Detectives

June 27 – July 8 [No SFS on July 4th]

Four feet, hollow fur, and a tuft of white? A few blue feathers and little white blotches on a boulder? Nibbled twigs and freshly dug tunnels? A shed of scaly skin and cache of spruce cones? Be a detective as you put together clues and follow them to each day’s wildlife mystery. Spy on the many animals of Mount Desert Island while enjoying the habitats they frequent. Plenty of games, crafts, and swimming to round out the weeks.

Bright Barnyard

July 11 – July 14
4-day Session: $230 Resident / $300 Non-resident

To the farm we go! Spend your days in the barnyard with the colorful parade of chickens, cows, ducks, pigs, sheep, geese, and guinea hens. Get your hands dirty in the ground, harvest seasonal veggies, and prepare farm-fresh snacks. Get a glimpse of our local food system through fun days spent at Peggy Rockefeller Farm, Beech Hill Farm, and other island farms. Learn about the natural history of many edible crops, play games, make crafts with feathers, enjoy a refreshing swim, and plant a seed of wonder this summer exploring the bright barnyard.

Tide Pool Party +

July 18 – July 28
9-day Session: $450 Resident / $535 Non-resident

Let’s celebrate the life on the edge, from low tide to high tide and beyond! Visit several cool, clear, pools to find barnacles, periwinkles, sea stars, urchins, anemones, and sea cucumbers. Pull back the rockweed to find lots of crabs and little nooks teeming with life. Taste salty algae and listen to the waves. Learn about the different zones in the intertidal and the creatures that live and adapt to each environment. Tide pool party on!

Census of Senses

August 1 – August 5

Bats hear shapes. Plants eat sunlight. Snakes smell heat. Bees dance maps. Discover different ways of perceiving the world and try a few out for yourself. The world is full of wonders to see, hear, taste, and feel—but that’s only the half of it. Imagine you’re a star-nosed mole digging through the dark earth or a sea star feeling for mussels with hundreds of tube feet! Appeal to all five of your senses and discover the ways that other living things sense the world around them. Play games, make crafts, and cool off with a swim too!

Acadia National Waterpark

August 8 – August 11

Ringed by countless miles of coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and Frenchman Bay, scattered with lakes and ponds, and crossed by tumbling clear brooks; Mount Desert Island is a water wonderland. Follow streams from tidewater to their boggy sources, slide down mountain streams, and swim with alewives and turtles in ponds across MDI and throughout ANP. Come prepared for wet feet and great times as we explore the magic of flowing water.
