Tina Alise Drupa ’22, Isidora Munoz Segovia ’22, and Eleanor White ’22 presented along side students from George Mason University at the College + University Recycling Coalition webinar series on single use plastics.
The CURC works to facilitate the exchange of technical knowledge and best practices on recycling and waste reduction programs among institutions of higher education.
Their Webinar Series and in-person Regional Workshops focus on current topics and allow for active engagement. They are both designed to enhance knowledge of recycling and waste reduction.
This webinar was on single use plastics, pervasive in our environment and on our campuses. While some plastics may be recyclable, only 9% of plastics on average are actually recycled, leaving the rest to be burned, buried, or clogging waterways and endangering the most vulnerable populations. Additionally, the upstream impacts to environmental justice, public health, and our environment are staggering. Thankfully, a movement is beginning at institutions of higher education, states, and municipalities to ban these items from their spaces.
Experts in this program discuss how they navigated the decision making process to ban single use plastics, identified and collaborated with key stakeholders across their institutions, and built strong partnerships for success.
