Writing Center

College of the Atlantic

The Writing Center team is here to assist you in any part of the writing process, even when you’re not sure how to begin.

We aim to help you holistically instead of just acting as proofreaders. We can offer feedback on drafts, or help you with understanding an assignment, brainstorming, outlining, navigating and implementing feedback, developing a revision plan, or talking through your ideas when you are stuck. You don’t need a draft or a fully formed idea to make an appointment with us, and we can discuss any kind of writing, whether it’s an assignment for a class, an application, a grant proposal, a personal writing project, a presentation, or something else.

Writing Center tutors have a wide range of interests and experiences with the diverse subject areas that students at COA study. Browse our bios to learn what we’re knowledgeable about, how we think about the writing process, what classes we’ve taken, and what languages we write in.

The Writing Center is tucked behind the student mailboxes on the first floor of the Arts & Sciences building—come visit us! We take walk-ins as well as scheduled appointments. You are also welcome to visit the Writing Center to hang out, read, write, make a cup of tea, or chill during your busy day.

Have you used the Writing Center? Here’s a post-session survey to help us improve our services.

Writing Center resources for faculty and staff

We would love to visit your class to offer a brief presentation about the Writing Center. We can introduce our approach to feedback, share a quick overview of a typical appointment, answer any questions, and help your students envision how they might use the Writing Center during your course.

Click here to request a presentation or workshop. We may reach out to request additional information for planning purposes.

A tutor liaison who has a depth of experience with your field, has taken courses with you, and/or has a good understanding of your assignments can be an excellent resource for your students. A tutor liaison won’t attend your classes or serve as a TA but can act as a point of contact in the Writing Center. You have the option of asking your students to meet with the tutor liaison for support on specific assignments.
