A college designed differently

Founded in 1969, College of the Atlantic is the first and only college where every student designs a self-directed major in human ecology—the study of the systems that connect people and place. Our interdisciplinary, action-oriented approach prepares students to address complex global challenges through collaboration, creativity, and sustained inquiry.

Self-designed Education

Human ecology is more than way of studying—it’s a mindset. Students at COA don’t choose from predefined departments. Instead, they build a personalized program that blends science, art, humanities, policy, design, and practice. The goal: connect ideas, communities, and ecosystems in ways that spark real change.

Purpose-Driven Learning

From sustainable farms to remote island research stations, your classroom extends far beyond four walls. You might be launching a nonprofit, building a composting toilet, mapping seabird migration, or designing a climate justice campaign. Students turn knowledge into practice every day.

A small community with big ideas

With just 350 students, 35 faculty, and 60 staff members, COA is intentionally small. This means you’ll get to know everyone—professors, peers, and even the people who read your admission essay. You’ll also have a real voice in how the college runs, through our unique model of shared governance.

Our Location: Bar Harbor, Maine

Situated on Mount Desert Island and surrounded by Acadia National Park, our oceanfront campus is a spectacular laboratory for environmental learning, outdoor exploration, and artistic inspiration. Students hike, kayak, and ski just minutes from their dorms.

Students Lead here

At the weekly All College Meeting (ACM), students, staff, and faculty come together to shape policies, budgets, and community practices. It’s dynamic, empowering, and deeply real—just like democracy should be.

Recognition & Impact

COA is consistently ranked among the greenest colleges in the country and recognized for our engaged, interdisciplinary education. Our alumni go on to lead in science, education, art, policy, and entrepreneurship—with real-world accolades to prove it.
