The Champlain Society was established in 1988 to honor College of the Atlantic’s most generous annual donors. The support of Champlain Society members is critical to advancing the college’s mission, ensuring academic excellence, providing financial aid, and enhancing COA’s campus, island research stations, farms, and other learning environments.

The Champlain Society hosts a variety of special events throughout the summer that are designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity, enhance opportunities for cultural engagement, and complement Mount Desert Island’s celebrated social environment. The annual Champlain Society solicitation appeal is mailed in the spring with a summer calendar of special events, including the Summer Institute and Coffee & Conversation

Benefits of Champlain Society membership:

  • Invitations to premier summer events, such as The Champlain Society cocktail reception, special lectures, and boat trips and other excursions with COA’s president and members of the faculty
  • An annual gift for Champlain Society members only
  • Reserved seating at select events
  • Name recognition in publications, online, and COA events calendars
  • Subscription to the COA Magazine
  • News and special announcements from the college

Additional benefits of President’s Circle membership ($25,000 or more):

  • Invitation to an inclusive dinner party with the President and special guests

The Champlain Society membership year begins on July 1 and runs through COA’s fiscal year-end on June 30. Memberships are welcome throughout the year!

These gifts include bequests, charitable gift annuities, and gifts of life insurance, to name a few.
