The Champlain Society was established in 1988 to honor College of the Atlantic’s most generous donors. Member support is critical to enhancing our academic program and providing students with opportunities to innovate, learn, discover, and apply their education in real-world settings.

Champlain Society giving levels:

President’s Circle $25,000+
Founder $10,000 - $24,999
Pathfinder $5,000 - $9,999
Discoverer $2,500 - $4,999


*As of July 1, 2024, membership for The Champlain Society begins at $2,500. During this transition year, membership for fiscal year 2024 will also be granted for gifts of $1,500 or more made through June 30, 2024. After June 30th, a gift of $2,500 or more will be needed to qualify for membership.

The Champlain Society hosts a variety of special events throughout the summer that are designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity, enhance opportunities for cultural engagement, and complement Mount Desert Island’s celebrated social environment. The annual Champlain Society appeal is mailed in the spring with a summer calendar of special events, including the Summer Institute and Coffee & Conversation

Benefits of Champlain Society membership:

  • Invitations to premier summer events, such as The Champlain Society cocktail reception, special lectures, boat trips, and other excursions with COA’s president and members of the faculty
  • Early registration for the Summer Institute
  • Preferred seating at select events
  • Name recognition in publications, online, and COA event calendars
  • Subscription to the COA Magazine
  • News and special announcements from the college

Additional benefits of President’s Circle membership ($25,000 or more):

  • Invitation to the President’s Circle dinner each summer

The Champlain Society membership year begins on July 1 and runs through COA’s fiscal year-end on June 30. Memberships are welcome throughout the year!

Honoring COA’s mascot, The Black Fly Society was established to make donating easier and greener. We hope you’ll join this swarm of sustaining donors by setting up a monthly online gift. It’s the paperless way to give to COA. Click here, and under gift frequency select “monthly.”

Alum gifts are critical to College of the Atlantic. The Alumni Leadership Circle (ALC) honors the generosity and philanthropic leadership of alums who give $500 or more to COA. In appreciation for this support, the Alumni Relations and Advancement Office offer special events to our ALC members.
