Tutorial: The Long Heat: Climate Politics When It’s Too Late

In this advanced tutorial, students will deeply engage with the book The Long Heat (2025), by Wim Carton and Andreas Malm. The book is an in-depth, scholarly political-economic examination of technologies of climate change adaptation, carbon dioxide removal, and geoengineering. Students will also undertake a term-long research or communications project, likely in conjunction with non-governmental organizations that are engaged in advocacy to address or prevent the impacts associated with adoption of the technologies discussed in the book. Class meetings will include a mix of lecture, discussion, and direct interaction with colleagues within the collaborating NGOs. Evaluation will be based on class discussions and attention to the quality of work in the final project.
